Colston Bassett Continues to Conquer

Colston Bassett Dairy is celebrating two distinct successes this week following the International Cheese Awards, and the announcement of this year's Great Taste stars. The latest additions to the trophy cabinet include: a Gold medal for Shropshire Blue, and a Silver medal for Stilton at the International Cheese Awards; alongside three stars for Stilton, and two stars for Shropshire Blue at the Great Taste Awards.

International Victory

Held in Nantwich, Cheshire on Tuesday 26th July, this year's International Cheese Awards saw a record-breaking number of entries. With more than 5,000 cheeses judged by a team of 200 experts, the Awards are one of the world's largest celebrations of cheese. Colston Bassett's achievements continue on the back of two monumentally successful year's where the Dairy collected Reserve Champion UK and Best Stilton in 2015 and won the highest prize of all Supreme Champion in 2014. This ongoing recognition, on a global stage, demonstrates the exceptional cheesemaking skill of the Nottinghamshire Dairy.

Great Success at Great Taste

Adding to the excitement, the Guild of Fine Food has also this week announced the results of their annual Great Taste Awards. The acknowledged benchmark for the speciality food and drink sector, recognition is highly sought after. Over 49 days, between April and July, more than 500 expert judges worked in teams to decide which products were worthy of one, two or three-stars. With just one third of the 10,000 entries receiving stars, collecting both two star and three star accolades is another significant achievement which places Colston Bassett in roughly the top 1% of entrants.

Billy Kevan, Dairy Manager at Colston Bassett Dairy, comments: “What a brilliant week – it is tremendous that Stilton and Shropshire Blue have done so well in both these high profile competitions! Great Taste stars are highly respected by all artisan food producers, last year our Shropshire Blue went on to be crowned Best Regional Product for the Midlands and East Anglia in the Golden Forks ceremony – but I'm not getting my hopes up too much! It is pleasing that again and again judges identify our cheese as being the very best in its class.  Awards success reaffirms that our efforts set us apart.”

One of this year's comments from the judging table at the Great Taste Awards described Colston Bassett's three star winner  as; “... the perfect Stilton. It has a lovely, rounded and complex lingering flavour in the mouth.”
