Trophy for New English Organic Vineyard

Oxney Organic Estate, a new vineyard and winery near Rye in East Sussex, has been awarded the Waitrose Rosé trophy for the Most Outstanding Still Rosé Wine at this year's English & Welsh Wine of the Year Competition, the results of which were announced earlier this week.

The award winning wine, Oxney Organic Estate English Pinot Noir Rosé 2015, is the vineyard's second vintage and made by winemaker Ben Smith with David Cowderoy as consultant winemaker.  The light pink rosé is described as “totally dry, very fruity and has a good acid balance”.  Clean and healthy fruit was harvested late October despite some challenging conditions during the end of summer 2015. The grapes were crushed and destemmed and left to soak in the press for twelve hours.  After fermentation the wine went through partial malolactic fermentation to naturally reduce the acids and add texture.

“This trophy is an incredibly important endorsement of the work the team is doing in the winery and the vineyard,” says Kristin Syltevik, Oxney's owner and founder.  “The rosé has been very popular with our customers - last year's vintage sold out in six weeks - so we realised it was a very special wine.”

Oxney Organic Estate was established in 2012 by Kristin Syltevik. The now 8.36 hectare (21.39 acres) vineyard was planted over three years between 2012 and 2014. The estate planted Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and Seyval Blanc. Its first sparkling wine will be ready in November 2016.

The vineyard lies in a protected space near the river Rother, six miles from the south coast. The vines are cared for using a natural regime which includes mechanical weed management and an innovative spray programme including home-made herbal teas and bio-pesticide products.  The vineyard is Soil Association accredited.

The wine retails at £15.00 and is available to buy from Oxney's website www.oxneyestate.com as well as in selected restaurants and retailers.
