Knightor Celebrates English Wine Week In London And At Home

The spring bank holiday weekend is rapidly approaching. Marking the start of the half term week for most schools, for many it is a time to escape the city and head south to unwind in Cornwall. This year, it also marks the start of English Wine Week (24th May to 1st June). The good news is that whether you're staying in the big city or making the trip down to the most south westerly county, you'll now be able to enjoy classic English wines from Cornwall's highly regarded Knightor winery.

The elegant, light and immensely drinkable Knightor Madeleine Angevine 2012 and the much praised sparkling Knightor Brut NV are both now available to buy in one of London's leading fine wine merchants, Spirited Wines, and from their website www.spiritedwines.co.uk. Spirited Wines has 26 stores which are mostly positioned in London with a few in the surrounding counties.  It is their first venture into English wine and Knightor is the only producer which has had two of their wines selected for the list. To celebrate both the launch of the new listings with Spirited Wines and English Wine Week, on Saturday 24th May there will be tastings in store of the new English wines, including Knightor.

Commenting on the wines, Mark Connolly, range manager at Spirited Wines says: "I have long wanted to support English vineyards and to celebrate the great wines that are increasingly available, and for me Knightor represents the smaller wineries that are starting to make waves. They are pushing the boundaries of what English wine can be with their fruity, exuberant and charming wines."

On the Spirited Wines website the individual wines are given an 'aromatag'. Different wines can be searched for by aroma, which will work particularly well for aromatic wines such as the Madeleine Angevine which has delicate aromas of elderflower, gooseberry and citrus.

For those in Cornwall during this week, there will be tours and tastings from Thursday 29th May to Sunday 1st June at Knightor winery and restaurant. All diners will be given a complimentary sampling glass of their sparkling wine to go with their new summer menu. See www.knightor.com for further information and details of times.

Knightor's winemaker James Thomas expresses his philosophy on making English wine: "With English wine the difference is generally the lightness of style.  This is their hallmark and is also what they excel at, and although some wines in our range have more fruit weight than many you'd get from other countries such as Picpoul de Pinet or Muscadet sur lie, they all retain an elegance that is part of the inherent character of English wine."

The style of the wines from Knightor makes them the ideal accompaniment for fresh and delicious seafood dishes as well as classic English salads and cheeses.  They are also perfect for taking on a picnic or enjoying with a BBQ over the summer months, or for simply sipping chilled whilst soaking up the sun.

Only the highest quality grapes are selected for Knightor wines meaning production is limited. Bottles of these handcrafted wines are also available online at www.knightor.com or direct from Knightor's on-site shop.  With tours and tastings available, it is well worth a visit. There is also an exceedingly good restaurant allied to the winery, which is a joint offering widely known in the New World but rare in the UK.  This makes Knightor, in its traditional Cornish setting, completely unique and a fantastic destination this summer.

Knightor's portfolio of wines include:

Knightor Brut NV: A delightfully elegant sparkling wine with light floral, peach and apple aromas which was recently recommended by wine writer Terry Kirby

Madeleine Angevine 2012: A delicate floral wine, with gooseberry and elderflower flavours which was recently recommended by wine writers Matthew Jukes, Terry Kirby and Kate Hilpern as well as featuring as Tom Cannavan's 'Wine of the Week' on www.wine-pages.com/temp/knightor.com

Trevannion 2011: A blend of Siergerrebe, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris.  A powerful aromatic wine, rich in fruit flavours.  The 2012 vintage is soon to be released

Knightor Pinot Gris 2011: Knightor's flagship white wine; this is a unique and refined expression of Pinot Gris.  Restrained fruit, suggestive of grapefruit and peach, with subtle, complex notes reminiscent of gunflint, lanolin and oatmeal.  The palate is tight and quite linear but with great drive and persistence thanks to good acidity and structure.

All Knightor wines are available to buy direct from the winery by calling 01726 851 101

Knightor is located near St Austell Bay in Cornwall (PL26 8YQ) close to the Eden Project and off the A30.  For directions visit - http://www.knightor.com/directions-to-knightor.php
