Hawkshead Relish Launches New Beer Jellies At IFE

The origin of beer preserves lies in Italy where few exist made only in the kitchens of remote farmsteads. Taking inspiration from this ‘Gelatina di Birra Cometa’ and using beer and cider from award winning Lakeland craft breweries Hawkshead Relish  has captured the essence of the differing hops and apples varieties to compliment perfectly an array of cheeses.

Hawkshead Breweries ‘Windermere Pale Ale’, Cumbrian Legendary Ales breweries’ ‘Loweswater Gold’ and Cowmire Halls ‘Ancient Orchard Cider’ are all renowned in their own right for their exceptional brews.

Mark Whitehead co-owner of Hawkshead Relish who provides the inspiration and creativity to the range of over 100 preserves exclaims ‘I was fascinated by the concept of beer jellies to accompany cheese and wanted to create a version that really matched the type of beer & cider to best compliment the flavour and consistency of cheese. With these 3 fabulous breweries on our very doorstep we had plenty of an assortment of varying brews to ensure the final jellies were perfectly balanced to their intended purpose’.

Hawkshead Relish produces exceptional products ranging from locally inspired traditional recipes to innovative culinary creations which combine their expertise and passion for creating exquisite preserves; testament to this is the formidable awards they hold, 46 being ‘Great Taste’ awards from the Guild of Fine Food.

New flavour combinations and concepts launched by Hawkshead Relish often lead to trends in the speciality food sector and the unveiling of the latest condiment combo will be no exception.

This tremendous trio of Beer Jellies will ferment a renewed excitement in speciality cuisine!

History and ethos of the business.
The Hawkshead Relish Company was founded following the foot & mouth epidemic when Mark and Maria found their cafe devoid of customers and their livelihood threatened.

They looked to their skills and passions creating a small range of high quality handmade Relishes, Pickles and Preserves taking them to local shops. Within a few years they had won awards and the cafe was closed to make space for production, which today is housed in lovely 16thC barn overlooking Esthwaite water just a mile from Hawkshead Village.

The couple remain adamant that their business remains sustainable and provides employment for local people who often have to move away from the area to find work. They are keen champions for the food producers in Cumbria and although not available in the big supermarkets the Hawkshead Relish brand can be found at many small independent stockists throughout the UK and in the last few years they have successfully exported to over 30 countries worldwide.

The range which has expanded to almost 130 products is still made by hand using traditional open pans and without any additives, preservatives or flavourings, and to date have secured over 46 national and international awards.
