Asparagus Beats Champagne To No 1 For Jubilee Celebrations

ASPARAGUS MAKES RECORD COMEBACK AFTER DISASTROUS START TO SEASON

Research by the British Asparagus Festival based in the Vale Of Evesham has
found that asparagus is the top choice for Jubilee Celebrations this
weekend.

Over 1000 people across the UK were asked what they would be serving to mark
the Diamond Jubilee and asparagus topped the list. Those questioned ranged
from street party organisers through to individuals and chose asparagus
(31%) over champagne (27%), strawberries and cream (19%), traditional
afternoon tea (15%) and Pims (8%).

Matt Foster, MD of West Growers Ltd., a Worcestershire asparagus growers’
consortium, said:

We had a disastrous start to the Vale of Evesham asparagus season due to the
rain which saw the cancellation of one of the British Asparagus Festival
events due to a lack of asparagus.

The fantastic weather over the last ten days has meant we’ve been able to
deliver a bumper crop now but we’re still striving to meet the demand.

I think the initial scarcity helped to increase awareness of this fine
vegetable. What’s more, asparagus is a perfect finger food, it’s healthy and
it’s British. It’s the perfect touch of luxury to allow people to celebrate
the Queen”.

No doubt the Queen herself will be enjoying some asparagus as the first-cut
round of Vale Of Evesham asparagus was delivered to her a few weeks ago as
part of the Great Asparagus Run.

Angela Tidmarsh, organiser of http://www.britishasparagusfestival.org  which
continues until 21st June, added:

“Red Star Growers in Birlingham, Worcestershire are producing 14 tons of
asparagus a day in a bid to keep up with demand and the quality is at its
seasonal prime.   Supplies may tail off after the weekend so, if you don’t
want to miss out, buy English Asparagus now”
