Is organic worth more money than non-organic?

The truth is that the cost of some thing is very relevant to the person who is purchasing the goods.  Now if you are in the position to pay for the organics produces and do think that you can warrant the cost of them as your conscience tells you that it is right then you can get them .

If you are a signal parent on a tight budget and have two kids to feed the high ideals of organic farming and the environment are a long way away from what will be going threw your mind.

And that is sadly what we are looking at the gulf between be able to purchase them and not.  Is the purchase of organic ingredients being tailored to a more exclusive end of the market so that the maximum amount of revenue can be made?  Farmers I know who tell me that the money to be made out of organic is more than if you just farm ordinarily.  But the hard thing is to be classed as such.  You have to farm for so many years before becoming organic and then you are awarded here in the U.K. leaving you with that transition period of not being a profitable farm and not being able to call yourself organic.

Also having seen some of the large scale organic methods were a flame is used to scorch the soil to kill the weeds seems to me to be just as bad as a chemical spray.  It still kills all that it touches insects and the like.  Surely that is getting away from the ideal that organic farming was first all about.  To grow in a more environmentally friendly manner.

The thing is that the more we now here about what we eat and the more that we become aware of the things that are being done in the food industry the more we will want to change what we want to eat.  And if that is the case it will become more and more less expensive to get hold of the organic products.  If you compare the space on the shelves now to that of ten years ago in the average supermarket.  Ten years past you would have been hard pressed unless you was in a specialist shop to fine a organic product.  It was a fringe element that was just no market for.  Now there is an ever growing market for the products.

So are the organic products really worth the money, perhaps not right now.  Soon as the market grows and the availability increases, it will become a better value product.  Can you really tell the difference between organic and a well produced farm product not really.  It is more a matter for the individual.  But the other thing to consider is that as we have more people in the world and food cost rise is organic a viable option.  Organic crop yields are normally lower than conventional farming methods.  And compared to G.M. crops your yields can be a lot more than either conventional and organic.

So what do I say, if you think it is better than it is better but for me I leave it down to the customer and what they want.  A copout or what.

  1. I have mixed feelings about organic food. I do like to have fresh food and like to know where my meat comes from. Less chemicals would be good, but I know from growing my own how hard it is to get a good crop without some kind of help.
